Design Update for WAISworld.org: A Survey for WAISers (Roman Zhovtulya, USA, 10/02/14 7:46 am)Dear WAISers:
It's time we embark on an interesting and useful project that's long overdue--a complete overhaul of the design/look-and-feel for waisworld.org, to make it modern, lighter and most importantly, mobile device-friendly. Our current homepage design (waisworld.org) was launched over four years ago, which is eons in the IT world.
Please fill out a quick 5-question survey to give us some feedback on the proposed designs. The five samples represent what we consider to be "best practice" websites:

JE comments: Roman Zhovtulya has been working long hours with his development team to bring WAISworld into 2014. It's especially important for our new website to automatically "adjust" to the size of the reading screen. More and more WAISers are accessing their favorite Internet Forum on mobile devices. (I don't, as typing on the non-buttons of a "smart" phone is one of life's biggest frustrations. And editing a post on an iGizmo would be impossible.)
My only insistence is that we preserve the WAIS Globe Logo, which I've grown immensely fond of since its unveiling in 2010. It's friendly, whimsically retro, and perfectly conveys our focus on international events--as well as Ronald Hilton's life-long fascination with geography, which most of us share.
Please take a few minutes to do the survey. Thanks!

WAISworld.org Design Update
(Eugenio Battaglia, Italy

Oh, you are really putting me in a bind. I have no idea which website design remodel to choose, but I strongly agree with you: Keep the WAIS globe logo!
JE comments: So the WAISworld globe logo has at least two fans. Thank you, Eugenio!
Here, once again, is the link to the website survey: Please take a moment to give us your thoughts:

WAISworld.org Design Survey: Vote Now on the Two Finalists!
(Roman Zhovtulya, USA

Thanks to all who took part in the survey. We've registered 26 answers. Not a lot, given our 256-strong membership, but we saw the trend nonetheless.
The first place goes to our "Custom Design 1":

A close second is the Stanford adaptive design:

After a lot of deliberation and 10 versions later, we managed to combine the two approaches. Please let us know you preference in the new survey:
http://waisworld.org/go.jsp?id=iquest0&s=208&qs=1
Also, I'd like to address some points/requests that were asked in the survey:
1) Search engine
Despite what some of the respondents claimed, we do have a search engine on our homepage (waisworld.org), in the upper right, where one can search by keywords and/or authors. Granted, our search is not as fast or sophisticated as Google's. We can improve it if it is important.
2) Profile pages and bios of contributors
The features some requested (ability to see profiles of other WAISers, their bios, etc) are there and fully functional. I refer to my post of over a year ago:
http://waisworld.org/go.jsp?id=02a&objectType=post&o=77346
The trouble is, very few people have updated their profile (entered bio, etc.), so that's why nothing is displayed for most contributors.
Again, thank you for your feedback. I look forward to a new, more modern and responsive web design for waisworld.org.
JE comments: A big thanks to IT Director Roman Zhovtulya and his team...and a bigger mea culpa for not entering my own profile into the system. I must lead by example.

New WAIS Design Implemented. Final Suggestions?
(Roman Zhovtulya, USA

Dear WAIS Community:
Thank you for your input on the new WAIS design a while back. After months of working on dozens of designs, new logos, watermark features, etc., we are ready to present the final design implementation. Click here:
http://webservicecenter.net/uportal4/en/wais/home
The design follows the best principles of Responsive Web (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsive_web_design ), which means self-optimizes for the best viewing experience, depending on the type of the device (cell phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, etc), used to access it.
We would appreciate your feedback (just the design/look-and-feel, features--some links might not work yet) before we finally replace the old web design with the new one.
Please try viewing the link above specifically on mobile devices (phones, tablets, etc.), to fully appreciate the power of responsive design.
JE comments: I'm very excited about the new WAISworld, which we hope to launch by the New Year. A big thanks to WAIS IT Director Roman Zhovtulya and his international team of developers. One of our goals was to make our website mobile-friendly, as it hasn't been easy with the old webpage to read WAIS content on a tiny screen. I'm also looking forward to playing with the "sliding image" feature at the top of the new page, which will allow us to highlight some of the best WAIS photos.
Give it a test-drive, and send me your thoughts.
