German Elections, Cultural Differences, and Angela the Riveter (John Heelan, -UK, 09/21/13 4:22 am)We spoke about cultural differences recently. Given the EU's financial problems, this election poster of Angela Merkel might be interpreted differently by some Mediterranean and other cultures!
JE comments: Germany's elections are tomorrow, 22 September, and on this side of the Pond we've been too focused on Syria to notice. I hope some colleagues will send their thoughts and predictions.
The "Angela the Riveter" image is interesting on several levels, not the least of which is that the original Rosie was part of the campaign to defeat Germany in WWII. We have the original version (it doubles as a thermometer) hanging in our kitchen, right next to the Soviet submarine clock.
Two trivia items: The original poster did not depict Rosie (Rose Will Monroe), who worked at the Willow Run bomber factory in Ypsilanti, Michigan, but rather Geraldine Hoff, a young munitions worker in adjacent Ann Arbor. Only later did the poster become known as the iconic representation of Rosie. Wikipedia explains it all:
