Thailand: Loy Krathong Greetings (Steve Torok, Thailand) (John Eipper, USA, 11/24/07 7:06 am)

Steve Torok writes:

In Thailand today people gather at river, canal, or lake side
locations with elaborately decorated bamboo floats (the foam and
plastic kind are now banned) to light a candle and set the floats into
the evening breeze. Young couples watch anxiously to see if their
floats stay together or drift apart. Besides carrying away your sins
for the year (in the form of two coins put inside the float) the path
of the twinkling lights may allow you to divine the future. How long
will the candles stay lit? Where do they drift? Proudly down-river or
washed ashore soon by the wind and waves, with blown-out candles?
Music plays, traditional dancers and the people on shore dance to the
tune, "loy, loy cratong..."

I remember the first Loy Krathong in November, 1991 I celebrated at
the Oriental hotel pier in Bangkok with some Siam Society friends. I
had a paper and plastic float, very pretty, that went up in flames as
soon as the candle's light caught the paper, as the wind blew away my
float from the shore onto the wide Chao Phaya.

What will happen to me this year? As I watched, a little boy jumped
into the river and floated after the now darkened krathong and
"rescued" the two coins for himself.

That year I have had a "benign" brain tumor operation but I was
safe...could it have been the coins?

JE comments: The warmest Loy Krathong greetings to Steve and Sandy Torok.
