Sports and Geopolitics: NZ, England Cancel Cricket Tours of Pakistan (Muqtedar Khan, USA, 09/24/21 3:57 am)

Dear WAISers, I trust this item will be of interest:

Cricket Tour of Pakistan Cancelled: Revenge of the West?

In this Khanversation about the geopolitics of cricket, Dr. Muqtedar Khan explains what the Five Eyes intelligence alliance is, what kind of intel it provided about Pakistan which led to cancellation of the tours by NZC and ECB. He also dispels some of the conspiracy theories that are circulating on social media.

JE comments:  An excellent presentation.  It's ten minutes of analysis that I recommend to all WAISers.  New Zealand justified cancelling the cricket tour for security reasons, but one could also speculate that the decision was "payback" for Pakistan's assistance in the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.  Muqtedar argues against this hypothesis, to focus rather on the "Five Eyes" network, an intelligence cooperative among the English-speaking democracies of Britain, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.  The most probable explanation was an intercepted phone call or email from a high-ranking Pakistani or Taliban official.

Sports have always been front and center in geopolitics.  Muqtedar, thank you for bringing our attention to the latest "case study."
