Exclusive! David W. Pike Launches Five New Titles on WAIS: the Pentad (David Pike, France, 06/09/18 8:38 am)

JE: I am honored that the Dean of WAISers, David W. Pike, has published five new books on WAISworld.

Not only are the e-books free and universally available, but they are also the first titles since the Prof. Hilton days to carry the WAIS imprimatur.  See two of the covers below.

David's "Pentad" exploration of World War II carries the unifying theme of enclosure--whether concentration camps, Nazi occupation, or the hellish experience of the Ianfu ("Comfort Women") of Imperial Japan.  The titles can be accessed on our "publications" page:  http://waisworld.org/en/wais/publications/books

David Wingeate Pike. Les îlles anglo-normandes sous l'occupation allemande (2016).
---. The Kogun and the Jugun Ianfu: The Japanese Imperial Army and the Comfort Women 1932-1945 (2017).
---. Paris Under Nazi Occupation 1940-1944 (2017).
---. A Spaniard's Deathcamp Notebook (2018).
---. Nuremberg: The Photographic Proof (2018).

David sends this comment:

I am asked, Why a Pentad? Why not a Hexad, or an Ennead? Why, because enough is enough, and because Aristotle taught moderation in all things.

All five together deliver the sound of whooosh. You can't play it on a bagpipe, you need a Stalin Organ. I fell in love with whooosh in 1944, watching Pathé Gazette News in cinemas, showing reports from the Eastern front, missiles raining on the Wehrmacht.

And my new motto: I write books not to make money but to spend money.

A toast please to my team of technicians that made it all possible.

JE again: If the link above is fussy, you can visit the WAIS homepage from any computer worldwide!  Simply select "publications" on the top (red) banner.

I cannot express how grateful I am to David for entrusting his Pentad to our beloved organization, and ask all loyal WAISers to read and comment.  And of course, share the titles with everyone you know.

David wrote off-Forum that he is now going to set aside his historical research to focus on classical piano.  Expect a concert performance in September.  Bon chance and Godspeed, David:  you are an inspiration to us all.

  • David W. Pike's Pentad: Reviewers Needed! (David Pike, France 08/23/18 10:54 AM)
I'd like to invite WAISers to write a review for academic journals and/or newspapers of any of the five books in my Pentad. If interested, I can send a hard copy of the book by post.

JE comments: Just now, David, I'm reading your Paris under Nazi Occupation.  The other titles of the Pentad are below.

For WAISers who desire a hard copy for review, send me your address and I'll forward the info to David.
