Postre: El Salvador: and its gangs I (Evelyn Aleman, US) (John Eipper, USA, 11/03/06 2:14 pm)
Evelyn Aleman wrote about her country, El Salvador. and the plans of its "gangs--Mara Salvatruchas, a US export--to assassinate the president, and their unabashed blatant demands that schools
(private and public) make monthly payments to them or suffer vandalism". RH: This is a most serious problem, which Mexican TV covered regularly until this week, when the Mexican government sent special police (Polic a Federal Preventiva) to crush the uprising in Oaxaca, s story which has monopolized Mexican TV news. Long ago I traveled through El Salvador when there was no such problem. It is not quite accurate to describe the Mara Salvatruchas as a US export. They are young Salvadoreans who come here, lured by the American dream, do not find jobs, resort to crime. are deported and repatriated to El Salvador. The "American dream" is a two-edged sword. Surely the same disappointment among other immigrants from Latin America has the same results. I think it would be most unwise for Evelyn's Rotary to go to El Salvador. In another message, Evelyn asks about California politics. That would be of interest to WAIS if it involved (as it does) International problems such as immigration from Latin America or elsewhere. .
