Sexuality: Homosexuality and Morality (Istvan Simon, US) (John Eipper, USA, 10/17/06 6:35 pm)

Istvan Simon writes:

Robert Whealey wrote on October 17, 2006, responding to my earlier post:

I disagree with this [what I wrote] on three counts.
1. There is no "strong scientific evidence" that homosexuality,
lesbianism, bi-sexuality or other deviate behaviors are cause by heredity.
Genes, "blood," "temperaments" have been blamed for crime, alcoholism, low
intelligence of some races, women's problems, etc. because it is too easy
do. One asserts biology with little or no evidence. I think homosexuality
is caused by bad parents, sibling rivalry, religious oppression, divorces,
mismatched marriages and a complex set of environmental factors.

Istvan Simon answers:
Robert Whealey is mistaken on several grounds. First he puts words in my
mouth which I have not spoken. I did not say that homosexuality is caused
by heredity--I said that there is strong scientific evidence that
homosexuals are born that way, which is something completely different.
Sexual orientation is determined in utero. If the right chemical
conditions are present at the appropriate time of a pregnancy the child
will be "normal" and heterosexual; conversely if the wrong chemical
conditions are present, the child will be born a lesbian or a male
homosexual. There is overwhelming scientific evidence that homosexuality
is NOT caused by any of the environmental factors mentioned by Mr.
Whealey.
(RW) 2. Homosexuals do sometime cause harm. AIDS and pedophilia with
children.
(IS) This is complete nonsense. AIDS was not caused by homosexuals--it is
a heterosexual disease in Africa, and it is becoming a heterosexual
disease in the United States as well. It is a mere accident of nature that
in the United States this disease originally affected the homosexual
community. AIDS is not caused by homosexuals--it is caused by a virus
which is sexually transmitted, whether in heterosexual or homosexual sex. Robert Whealey should not spread such misinformation about this cruel
disease.
As for pedophilia, there are far more heterosexual pedophiles than
homosexual ones, something that one would also expect statistically,
because the homosexual population is about 10% of the population at large.
The mere fact that this percentage has been fairly constant and the same
in say China as in the United States is strong evidence that Mr. Whealey's
first point is just plain wrong, and his second point is no better.
(RW) 3. The idea that homosexuals are not contributing to the population
explosion sounds like a rationalization. The use of birth control devices
are more rational.

(IS) It is not a rationalization, nor did I recommend homosexuality as a
solution to the overpopulation problem. I merely stated a fact.
