PostObama to Visit Greece, November 16th (Harry Papasotiriou, Greece, 11/12/16 4:17 am)
President Obama will give an important speech in Athens on Wednesday, 16 November. He will be staying in Greece for two days, presumably to be in the evening news in Turkey and Germany on two consecutive days.
He will pointedly not visit Turkey--the destination of his first foreign visit as president in 2009--to make unmistakable his displeasure with Erdogan's authoritarianism and his policies in Syria and Iraq. He will go to Germany after Greece and will try to persuade the Germans to agree early on a haircut in the Greek debt owed to EU member-states.
JE comments: Harry Papasotiriou reminds us that Obama is the US president until January 20th, and there is still diplomacy to be done. A question for our European colleagues: Will anyone on the Continent be listening to our lame-duck president?
Harry: what has PM Tsipras had to say about the Trump victory? Have comparisons been made in Greece between The Donald and Erdogan?
