Islamophobia, Religious Intolerance, etc. (José Ignacio Soler, Venezuela, 03/08/15 4:36 am)

The recent WAIS posts about Islam, Islamophobia, tolerance, and Christian vs Islam comparisons, made me think over the subject. I have never been interested in debates about religion, because I always thought it is a very personal thing, not related to reasoning or facts but beliefs and faith. These are abstract intangible spiritual issues. To debate them is a never-ending process. Do I believe in God? That is not the question. Maybe I believe or I am agnostic, but surely I do not trust institutional churches.

The Catholic Church for instance was intolerant and cruel for too long; Christian factions, Catholics and Protestants fought some pretty torrid wars to hang onto what was their only truth.  Thank goodness this is already surpassed. In a sense the Western religions evolved to become more tolerant and "civilized."

Islam being a more recent monotheist religion, perhaps is still evolving. It is very much influenced by fundamentalism trends, sectarianism, intolerance and fanaticism, pretty much the same as the Catholic Church in its early stages and, as it was with Catholicism, "confusing" or messing up the spiritual world with political power. That is what I understand are the aspirations of Islamism, which on behalf of orthodoxy tries to extend the Koranic law to every stage of society; being the jihadist its violent and fanatic expression.

I am not Islamophobic, but surely I would be against Islamism as much as any other fanatic ideology, religious or political. I believe they represent a threat to Western civilization and their intolerance and violence are very much represented by recent Islamic demonstrators in London, after the recent attacks in Paris. I just wonder if they would be able to hold such outrageous manifestations in any Islamic country.

JE comments:  José Ignacio Soler forwarded several photos of the demonstration.  The following is representative of their tone and tenor.  Threatening stuff.  Aren't there laws against inciting violence?
