PostTHE SPIRIT OF CATALONIA (John Eipper, USA, 09/14/05 3:21 pm)
Tom Strubell sends this information. Thanks to Vilaweb, you can read the original English version (1946) of the book The Sprit of Catalonia written by Dr. Josep Trueta, in a digital edition. Dr. J. Trueta was one of the best known personalities exiled from Catalonia after the 1936-39 War. For a short biography in English see his entry at Wikipedia. The Spirit of Catalonia is one of the key books wrote during the dark years of the Franco's Regime, and it had an important influence in the Catalan Opposition. The author establishes a dichotomy: since the body of Catalonia is under Franco's boots, the Catalans must emphasize and protect the Catalan Heritage and let it be known around the World. RH: Here is what Wikipedia says: Josep Trueta i Raspall (1897-1977) was a Catalan medical doctor. Being a Catalan nationalist, he was forced to exile to England after the Spanish Civil War. During World War II, he helped in organizing medical emergency services there. His use of a new method for the treatment of open wounds and fractures helped save a great number of lives during the war. Trueta formed part of a group of Catalans exiled in the United Kingdom, which denounced the situation of Catalonia under Franco's regime. He wrote The Spirit of Catalonia, a book aimed at explaining catalan history to Anglosaxon society. He was Professor of Orthopaedy at the University of Oxford. He retired in 1966, and returned to Catalonia. The main Hospital in Girona has been named in his honour.
