John Heelan writes: I recall the disdain with which hotel staff in Eisenhuettenstadt, on the Polish border of East Germany, treated Russian guests in the early 70s. Staying there once while giving a couple of lectures, I noticed that coach tours containing Russian workers, apparently enjoying a holiday as a prize for achieving production norms, met with abysmal treatment by the locals. When I asked the reason, I was told "The war!".
