re: Theater: *My Name is Rachel Corrie* (John Heelan, UK) (John Eipper, USA, 09/22/07 4:57 am)

John Heelan [JH] responds to Randy Black [RB]'s post of 21 September:

[RB] Welcome back to John Heelan, who posted Sept. 21 about the matter of a
play that was delayed (not canceled) in New York and which was based
on the writings of a peace activist who purposefully stepped in front
of a bulldozer four years ago. My post only deals with facts, not my
opinion.

[JH] My thanks to Randy for his welcome. He should be aware that one
of his "facts" is not quite true. The Jewish Theatre website reports:
"The New York Theater Workshop canceled its planned production in
March 2006 after protests and supporter threats to withdraw money. The
play opened off-Broadway in October."

A similar thing happened later in Toronto: "... it appears that
(Martin) Bragg (CanStage's creative producer) faced pressure from some
of his board members not to alienate Toronto's Jewish community. While
admitting he has neither read nor seen the script, CanStage board
member Jack Rose said, 'My view was it would provoke a negative
reaction in the Jewish community.'"

Philanthropist Bluma Appel, after whom CanStage's flagship theater is
named, concurred. "I told them I would react very badly to a play that
was offensive to Jews," she said.

"Like few plays in recent memory, *My Name is Rachel Corrie* is
stirring the sort of controversy that does not die down easily. It was
scheduled for production with another New York theater, the New York
Theatre Workshop, which dropped it last spring citing, among other
reasons, concerns expressed by unnamed sources in the local Jewish
community. It was slated for a reading at Theater J, Washington,
D.C.'s prestigious Jewish playhouse, and was quickly canceled for
unclear reasons" (Jewish Week)

Perhaps the best summary is expressed by the play's writers, Alan
Rickman and Katharine Viner, who commented on the NYWT decision: "This
is censorship born out of fear, and the New York Theatre Workshop, the
Royal Court, New York audiences--all of us are the losers".

[RB] I did find one Internet site that stated, some of the names of
the trustees of the NYTW *appear* to be Jewish.

[JH] Had Randy looked a little more deeply, he would have discovered
that the NYTW's Founding Trustee is Stephen Graham, youngest son of
Katherine Graham (long time President of the *Washington Post*--the US's
major pro-Israel newspaper) which she inherited from her husband, who
in turn inherited it from multi-millionaire Eugene Meyer. Further, if
Randy consults http://www.nytw.org/doris-duke.asp he will find the
names of the non-profit theatre's major supporters.
