PostWhat Led Me to Stanford, Prof. Hilton (Richard Hancock, USA, 04/13/21 3:23 am)
To answer John E's question, I knew nothing of Ronald Hilton before I went to Stanford. I became acquainted with Prof. Hilton when, as a major in Spanish, I was required to attend his class in Hispanic Studies. After experiencing one semester of his class, I decided to major in Hispanic Studies rather than Spanish. I have never regretted this decision.
I was accepted for graduate study at several major universities but chose Stanford which I attribute to fortune and intuition.
JE comments: Great choice! Legend has it that Prof. Hilton ran a tight ship in his classroom and with the Hispanic American Report. I'll never forget the dress code--ties and jackets for gentlemen, skirts for ladies. If I required such a thing of my students, there would be an insurrection. Or what's worse, desertion en masse.
Richard, what are your most memorable RH classroom anecdotes?
