Marshall Plan (Tor Guimaraes, USA, 06/13/17 10:56 am)

For a long time now I have been saying that the demise of the USSR was the trigger for big American corporations to lose their patriotism and focus solely on increasing quarterly profits. So the last Great Recession caused by the massive mortgage fraud would never have happened if the USSR had still been around.

Some people did not believe me, but Eugenio Battaglia's post about the Marshall Plan alluded to that: "the US government did not seem too interested in alleviating the problems of the losers in Europe. Only when a Communist takeover of all Europe became a possibility did the US government change its mind and act."

Since all evidence seems to indicate that for the last decades our nation's standard of living, infrastructure, etc. are going down, the big question today is if the Marshall Plan saved Europeans from Communism after WWII, why can't the US government save the American people from the evils of ignorance, poverty, corruption, etc?

JE comments:  An existential threat (like the gallows) concentrates the mind wonderfully.  "Islamic Terrorism" doesn't have the same bogeyman gravitas as International Communism--but why is that?  Might it be the lack of a nation-state?  Its cultural otherness?  Overall weakness?
