PostThe Forgotten Genocide: Bangladesh 1970-'71 (Henry Levin, USA, 09/24/13 6:45 am)
See this book review from this week's Economist about the conflict that freed East Pakistan from West Pakistan and created Bangladesh. Amazing role of Nixon and Kissinger in the massacre of Hindus and the support of needless bloodshed.
JE comments: This is one of the human tragedies that most have forgotten. Our colleague Halimur Khan used to tell me how he tried to join his older brothers when they went off to fight the (West) Pakistanis in 1971, but they forced their 14 year-old brother to stay home.
Halimur travels regularly to his native Bangladesh. I'd love to hear his thoughts on the publication of Gary Bass's new book.
One apparent constant of US foreign policy: we have always been more enamored of Pakistan than that nation deserves.
