Icelanders' Hard-Nosed Handling of Bankers (Tor Guimaraes, USA, 06/24/13 4:07 am)

Thank God for the Internet. Much to my surprise a friend from Brazil sent me this short video about the bloodless coup the Icelandic people pulled on its government and its bosses: the banksters. Unfortunately for some interested parties, it is narrated in French with Portuguese captioning. Sorry.

I was a little surprised, so I tried to at least confirm the more important component: a totally new government. And that is confirmed below. Now, I hope some of the usual names will try to discredit the events by attacking the cameraman's grandmother for sniffing volcano fumes when she was young. I heard they do that in Iceland, you know.

JE comments:  I watched the YouTube above, and to my mind it raises more questions than it answers.  (I assume the video was originally made in English.  What's the deal with the Plot 911 folks?)  First of all, almost none of the video seems to be from Iceland, but of massive protests in Egypt, France, and (I think) Albania.  It's a pastiche of stock news footage.

Iceland's youthful new Prime Minister, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, represents a center-right party with anti-EU proclivities.  Gunnlaugsson has promised a referendum on Iceland's future relationship with the EU.  Will Iceland be the first EU domino to fall?

The video does make one irrefutable point:  we receive very little coverage of Iceland's political events.  It just so happens that the chair of my Department at Adrian College, Seth Knox, is spending the summer in Reykjavik.  I'm going to ask him to comment.

  • YouTube Video on Iceland (Tor Guimaraes, USA 06/25/13 4:24 AM)
I'd like to respond to JE's comments on my post of 24 June:

JE wrote: "I watched the YouTube above, and to my mind it raises more questions than it answers."

Yes, it does raise many questions.

JE:  "I assume the video was originally made in English. What's the deal with the Plot 911 folks?"

Why assume that? Is that a bit chauvinistic?

JE:  "First of all, almost none of the video seems to be from Iceland, but of massive protests in Egypt, France, and (I think) Albania. It's a pastiche of stock news footage."

The video is clearly about Iceland, even though it has links to world affairs that consumed most media attention while ignoring dramatic events in Iceland.

"The video does make one irrefutable point: we receive very little coverage of Iceland's political events. It just so happens that the chair of my Department at Adrian College, Seth Knox, is spending the summer in Reykjavik. I'm going to ask him to comment."

I'd like to ask Dr. Knox to confirms what the video says: 1. In 2009 the Prime Minister was deposed. 2. Ninety-three percent of the Icelandic people voted for not paying the debt "created by the banks." 3. Some big bank executives went to jail or had to flee the country. 4. A new Icelandic Constitution was created, copying the Danish one.

JE comments: I try not to be chauvinistic...unless I'm bashing Walmart. (!) I assumed the YouTube video was originally made in English because of the written text in that language: "The Plot 911," "Free Your Mind," and "Get the F*#& Out." Although now, on reviewing the video again, I see that they use a French-language map of Iceland.

Can anyone give us the background on Plot 911? The organization has a paranoia theory in its very name. None of this, of course, proves that it is wrong about Iceland.

I'll drop my colleague Seth a line. Maybe--just maybe--he'll even send us a photograph or two.
