Liberation Theology and the "Holy Alliance": Carl Bernstein (David Fleischer, Brazil, 02/15/13 2:44 pm)

Remembering the "Fear of Marxism/Communism" in the early 1980s (see John Heelan, 15 February), Pope John Paul II assumed power in 1979 and US Pres. Ronald Reagan in 1981. According to the 1992 Time magazine article "The Holy Alliance" by "Watergate crusader" Carl Bernstein--these two leaders struck an interesting bargain when Reagan visited the Vatican in June 1982. The Pope agreed to "quash" the Liberation Theory movement in Latin America (at Reagan's request), and in return Pres. Reagan agreed to 1) help the Pope "liberate" his homeland (Poland) from Communist rule by sustaining the Solidarity movement; and 2) open full diplomatic relations with the Vatican. No Democratic president (or even Ike or Nixon) dared to do this, but Reagan as a divorced man, kept this part of their bargain. Bernstein later published a full-length book, His Holiness: John Paul II and the History of Our Time. Penguin Books, 1996.

JE comments:  So it was really Pres. Reagan who did the "quashing"?  David Fleischer adds new fuel to this discussion, which is getting very interesting.  We still need to ask what a revival of Liberation Theology might mean today.  Does the term carry too much historical baggage to be of any use?  I suspect it does.
