Conspiracies, Conspiracies, Conspiracies (Ronald Hilton, USA, 02/19/01 12:43 am)

Part of the conspiracy theories is that the Warren Commision, appointed to investigate the killing of President Kennedy, deliberately kept things secret to counter charges that it was the result of a conspiracy. Miles Seeley reports:

"The conspiracies I know most about involve the US Government, like the Kennedy assassination, about which shelves of books citing mountains of "evidence" have been written. Scores of theorists have made a career of it. And they are almost entirely devoid of any relationship to reality, I believe.

I was a fairly major contributor to the Warren Commission, through an accident of time and place. I was abroad debriefing Soviet sources and was given a lot of material on the subject. The Soviets were terrified that we would blame them, because Oswald had ¡defected' to the USSR and had a Russian wife, etc. The Commission was extraordinarily thorough and professional in gathering and evaluating the evidence. Those of us in government were given an unconditional mandate to report anything we came across, to hold back nothing.

Then, you must realize that the government is subject to reelection every 2-4 years, and the parties, as we know, strive mightily to dig up dirt on their opponents. It is exceptionally difficult to keep any scandal a secret. Someone knows, someone will tell for the right money, or fame, or position. The major foundations I have dealt with are somewhat the same: there are always a few disaffected employees or principals, and if there are major-league secrets and conspiracies, they will out.

Hillary Clinton bombed when she alleged a right-wing "conspiracy" against charming Billy. What was really there was a large group of like minded people who couldn't stand him or stood to profit from his downfall. That is not a conspiracy, any more than the works of a campaign committee are. They may play dirty and lie, cheat, and steal, but they are not conspirators. If you can't see the difference, your world view will be seriously skewed."

My comment: "No creo en las brujas, pero que las hay, las hay". "I don¡'t believe in witches, but they certainly exist".
