WikiLeaks, US Exceptionalism and the Media (Nigel Jones, -UK, 10/27/10 12:11 pm)

The all-embracing nature of WAIS is demonstrated by the fact that it can contain two members politically as far apart as Jon Kofas and I.

Every week I read his anti-American, pro-Marxist posts and wonder not so much whether I inhabit the same continent, but whether I am actually on the same planet and living in the same century as he. Jon's posting of 26 October is a fine example of what I mean.

Where most commentators see the American national broadcast media (with the notable exception of Fox News) as being broadly Liberal, centre-left, pro-Democrat, pro-Obama, Jon sees a wicked pro-NATO, right-wing conspiracy.

Where commentators are virtually united in condemning the state-funded NPR radio network for sacking the black, left-wing commentator Juan Williams, for merely saying that the presence of Muslims in traditional dress on board an airplane made him feel
"uneasy," Jon sees this as "racism."

Oh well, that's the wonder of WAIS, I guess.

JE comments:  Might we say WAIS stands for What an Ideological Spectrum?  All I know is it's never boring to edit and moderate (as if "moderation" were possible, really) our discussions!

Which gets me thinking:  the new WAIS website has a yet-to-be completed section on the homepage, "What WAIS is not."  (It's in the left column, second button.)  I would begin by saying that we are not homogeneous or monaural, but diverse and polyphonic.  WAIS, as a collective, is not tendentious.  Indeed, we sound right-wing to some, left-wing to others.  I always say that if you agree with every posting you read, then you must be at some other website.

A number of months ago I posed the question, What is WAIS?  How about reflections on "What is WAIS not?"  I'd love to hear them.
