PostU of Cape Town Fire: An Appeal for Help (Jose Manuel de Prada, -Spain, 05/13/21 6:24 am)
In connection to the recent and devastating fire that destroyed the African Studies collection at the University of Cape Town, John Eipper asked if I knew of any "crowd funding" initiative to help with the rescue.
After asking former special collections librarian Tanya Barben, she made inquires to the university on my behalf and I have been directed to this page:
Donations sent here will go exclusively to the rebuilding of the library, and to the salvage and restoration of materials damaged.
Updates of the recovery effort are regularly posted on the following blog:
The fire at Notre Dame in Paris was quite a blow to world heritage. The fire that destroyed part of the University of Cape Town is in many ways a tragedy of the same magnitude for Africa and for the whole world, even if outside Africa it didn't make the headlines. In Spain, for example, it was barely mentioned.
JE comments: Thank you, José Manuel, and WAISers: please get the word out. Rescuing an archives is a very WAISly goal. I'll be making a contribution myself.
