PostCornelia Lohs, Travel Writer Extraordinaire (Patrick Mears, -Germany, 03/17/21 2:16 pm)
In Germany, there is the primary organization of travel journalists called the "Touristik PR" that meets every year this time of year during the worldwide ITB Congress. Here is the link to the ITB event this year. https://www.itb-berlin.de.
That Congress is the event of the year for travel journalists throughout the world. This year, the meetings have been conducted via Zoom. There is one group of German travel journalists that, every year in conjunction with this Congress, votes to rank the best German "Travel Journalists of the Year" based on a number of factors, which numbers are then totaled for purposes of the rankings. Two years ago, my wife Connie Lohs was voted in place 47, and last year, she jumped up to #24. The rankings came out today and she is now ranked #15 in Germany, which is amazing considering that she just started from scratch on this career just a few years after I met her (in 2008).
This is a well-deserved honour for Connie. She is a very talented writer, especially in this genre, and works very hard improving her skills, networking, hustling for business and traveling around (well, not within the last year for obvious reasons). And moreover, she is very humble about this achievement. So this is her moment and I hope that she enjoys it to the fullest. The honour is well-deserved.
JE comments: Pat, we are all proud of Connie! In our "virtual" age of Covid, travel journalism has come full-circle since its infancy in the early 19th century: now as two centuries ago, the genre no longer "enhances" your trip, but rather substitutes for it.
Can you ever entice Connie (and yourself, of course) to visit us in lil' ol' America? I'd be honored to meet her.
And a very happy St Patrick's day to WAISdom's favorite Pat! I've been sporting a rather ugly green tie all day; looking forward to taking it off...
