PostScenes from a Gathering of Trump Supporters (Tor Guimaraes, USA, 09/14/20 5:42 am)
My deepest gratitude to John Eipper for his kind words. I admit to being relentless in new knowledge acquisition, but wisdom is an elixir acquired in small doses over a lifetime of experiences and meditation. Every day, just before getting up, I pray to God the Universe for health, wisdom, success in my efforts, and happiness. So far, I am very grateful that God has been very kind to me.
On Saturday I had to walk into the lion's den: a family side gathering where most members present are staunch Trump supporters. This was particularly hard because they are otherwise wonderful people and my wife asked me nicely not to start any political debates. I agreed because it is hopeless anyway; while I saw no white supremacists, most are Christian Fundamentalists who think they know about the science of genetics and genomes but see no implications to Creationism and racism.
Normally, I would have considered my duty as a teacher to ask how can anyone select a leader who lies to them about anything he feels like, but specially about a deadly virus which has the potential to overwhelm the health care system, has destroyed the real US economy for the next decade, and has already killed close to 200,000 Americans and counting? See this short video:
How can you support a president who after almost four years in power has delivered no benefit whatsoever to the nation, has destroyed the economy, allowed the creation of close to 40 million unemployed, a fast growing number of hungry citizens with no health care, millions of homeless people?
How can I convince such people that the financial markets are not real anymore and will crash sooner or later? That the real economy has been on the wrong foot for decades and this irresponsibly managed Coronavirus has delivered a death blow which will make America a sick military giant instead of MAGA?
How can I convince them that racism and nationalism must be left behind, that the dirty word globalism is necessary if we are to successfully manage any serious pandemics, the sneaky devastation of global warming, water pollution, ignorance, poverty, disease?
How can I convince you that while capitalism is economically healthy, it requires strong controls to ensure free markets, a decent income for workers, and consumer protection? The relentless pursuit of quarterly profits in the short term has ultimately led to the social political economic crisis that we have today. And our experts today are checkmated with no way out except preparing their own parachutes.
How can you support a national leader whose divisive, egotistical approach to negotiation has made our nation MIA among world leaders in an increasing number of critical coalitions and global institutions trying to reduce the deadly threats from nuclear war, pandemics, poverty, etc.?
I could go on, but I feel too depressed. I don't like Biden, Obama, the Clintons, but Trump will speed up the destruction of my beloved America. We need time for stronger minds to engage.
JE comments: I've seen reports that a growing number of Christian Fundamentalists are re-reading the Ten Commandments and deserting Trump. Still, the "King David Defense" (https://waisworld.org/go.jsp?id=02a&objectType=post&o=138544&objectTypeId=101855&topicId=149 ) seems to be holding steady for most. My weekend yard sign poll around WAIS HQ-Onsted (Lenawee County) was about 10 to 1 in favor of Trump. This seems to confirm what Bernie Sanders recently observed about Michigan: Trump supporters may be in the minority, but they are far more enthusiastic. It will come down to who actually votes. As The Bern wisely phrased it, Trump's defeat is anything but a slam-dunk.
