PostMemorization: A Ship Captain's Wisdom (Eugenio Battaglia, Italy, 07/29/20 7:42 am)
An old professor of mine, a former ship captain, used to say:
"There are some things, such as the rules of the convention against collisions at sea, that should completely be memorized. But you also must understand them."
I think that he was right.
JE comments: Aye, Captain! That's what training is all about, or should we call it "internalization"? This is especially important in crisis situations. Or when mastering a foreign language: The forms and structures have to be automatic.
