PostBlack Friday Special! 19% off WAIS Donations (John Eipper, USA, 11/29/19 8:04 am)
The business of America is Business, and shopping is the foremost example American Exceptionalism.
This morning we drove #1 son Martin to the airport for his 5:00 AM flight to Boston, and around 5:30 we passed a local Walmart. The parking lot was filled to capacity.
Which got me thinking...why not run a Black Friday special for WAIS Wednesday?
Until 23:59 today, November 29th, donations of $100 will cost just $81! (I will make up the difference--is it legal to do this? Let's hope so.) That's a 19% discount!
Here are the details:
1. Via PayPal to firstname.lastname@example.org
2. Via check (payable to WAIS) c/o John Eipper, Goldsmith Hall, Adrian College, Adrian MI 49221 USA (envelopes postmarked November 29th qualify for the 19% discount).
A special thanks to our newest donors John Hesley, Martin Packard, and our stalwart sponsor Eugenio Battaglia, who has already sent his contribution for 2020.
Seven more donors to go before WAIS Wednesday! Or let's raise the bar to NINE new donors prior to that time.
Pax et lux...and now I'm off to shop.
Eight to Go! WAIS Wednesday Update
(John Eipper, USA
11/30/19 4:07 AM)
The latest name on the WAIS 2019 Honor Roll is no stranger to honor: General Michael Sullivan. Michael's illustrious career as a Marine Corps pilot is matched only by his loyalty, generosity, and captivating gift for storytelling. Aldona and I fondly and often recall our visit to Michael and Nicole's North Carolina home at Christmas 2013--can it have been that long ago? Well, the picture proves it:
Much honored to have you with us, General!
So we have eight new donors to go, and five days remaining until WAIS Wednesday. Don't let that other WAISer steal all the honor and glory! WAIS needs YOU!
1. Via snail-mail (checks to WAIS): John Eipper, Goldsmith Hall, Adrian College, Adrian Michigan 49221 USA
2. Via electronic wizardry: PayPal at email@example.com

Seven to Go! Cyber Monday Approaches

"So where's the WAIS content?" you ask.
WAISers have been strangely silent all Thanksgiving weekend. Nothing going on in the world? Perhaps it's a protracted turkey hangover. If so, as Bill Clinton reassured us, I feel your pain. We enjoyed a third TG dinner last night at our neighbors' house, and will definitely be doing penance with extra time at the gym. Starting today? Well, first there are leftovers to work through.
One WAISer not caught in a trytophan stupor is Brian Blodgett, who sent his second generous donation of 2019. Thank you and thank you, Brian! Brian joined WAIS way back in 2008, and somehow I've still not met him in person. But in reviewing Brian's bio (through '08; see below), I noticed something I overlooked before: he was born in Fremont, Ohio, just an hour from Adrian and the hometown of President Rutherford B. Hayes. The Hayes mansion, Spiegel Grove, is the most beautiful presidential home no one has heard of. And how many knew that the adjacent presidential library (from 1916) is the first in the nation? Or that Hayes was the first president elected (in 1876) after losing the popular vote? In our 21st century, this has become the new normal.
Hail to Rutherford B. Hayes! And even more so, hail to Brian Blodgett!
Here's the deal: Please join Brian on the 2019 Honor Roll, or I'll subject WAISers to more presidential trivia!
1. Via old-school mail (checks payable to WAIS): John Eipper, Goldsmith Hall, Adrian College, Adrian Michigan 49221 USA
2. Via PayPal: firstname.lastname@example.org
Next up: a detailed monograph on why Hayes is venerated in Paraguay...and not loved so much in Argentina. And then I'll turn our attention to Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) and the much-scrutinized Bathtub Hoax.
