PostHitler, Franco, and the "Schweinhund" Quote (David Pike, France, 11/07/19 6:11 am)
Our editor asked for my help on a Hitler quote.
Eugenio Battaglia (6 November) tells us that, after their meeting in Hendaye, Hitler said of Franco, "Wir haben den falschen Schweinhund geholfen."
I ask Eugenio to tell us to whom Hitler said this, or where did Eugenio read it. I fear that Eugenio will reply with an obfuscation, such as a reference to the general buzz in Hendaye during the week of the Hitler-Franco summit, or to the Führer's expression of disappointment with the Caudillo, which happens to be known to the whole world.
What I and others would like to know is where, when and to whom did Hitler state that the Frente Popular was after all preferable to the other Schweinhund?
JE comments: "Schweinhund" (pig-dog) must be the German equivalent of "our bastard." Both epithets are unfair to our porcine and canine friends, as well as to those who happen to be born out of wedlock.
Long, long ago, WAIS had a discussion titled "Bestiary of Insults." The topic still exists in our website menu, but we haven't visited it since 2006...until today.
