Are There Neighborhood Militias in South Africa? (Timothy Ashby, -Spain, 11/01/19 3:31 am)

When commenting on my South Africa post of October 31st, John E asked, "Are neighbors organizing in vigilante or self-defense militias? I would expect this to be the case in the countryside, but what about in the coastal enclaves?"

Aside from ineffectual neighbourhood watch groups, there are no organised vigilante or self-defence organisations that I am aware of. It is very difficult to obtain a firearms permit, although nearly everyone I know has a pistol or shotgun. Most farm attackers are armed with firearms, in some cases AK-47s and FNs.

In St Francis Bay and similar communities, there has been systematic poisoning of dogs, which are the best "early warning" system.

JE comments:  For cruelty to dogs, there can be no forgiveness.  But turning to the countryside, imagine the horror of seeing a mob with machine guns descend on your farm.  More than a few planters must be leaving.  I would imagine there are food shortages, or at least rising prices on staples.  Tim, did you observe this?
