Professor Ronald Hilton: 1911-2007 (John Eipper, USA, 02/20/07 10:47 pm)

To the WAIS community:

I have just been informed, and it is my painful duty to announce, that our beloved Professor Hilton passed away this morning, February 20th. His daughter, Mary Huyck, sends us the following:

Just a very sad note to let you know that Ronald Hilton, my father, died this morning. I had a call about an hour ago from his caregiver, who filled me in as best he could. Apparently, RH was fading but in no apparent discomfort yesterday. The caregivers suggested to him that they call 911, but he refused. He was surely happiest being in his own home and in his own bed, and it sounds as if he simply drifted away while dozing and watching TV. Although our family is very distressed, I know that this is how he would have wanted the end to be.

I would very much appreciate your informing the members of WAIS of his passing. As you know, WAIS and everyone affiliated with it meant the world to him.

JE: I ask all WAISers to say a prayer for Prof. Hilton's family. I know we are all in shock--WAIS owes its very existence to Prof. Hilton, and I promise him that we will continue his work in his memory. I will do my best, over the coming hours and days, to keep the community informed about this very sad event.
