If in one thousand years there are historians analysing us, I hypothesise they will consider us as the "age of happy slaves." We tell ourselves we got rid of slavery. But this is not true: governments, laws and countries are the pure embodiment of slavery. Any law systematically divides people into masters and slaves. What happens is we do not feel ourselves as such, basically because all the media and education systems are created in such a way to stop us from thinking about ourselves as slaves, in a "Matrix" way.
In a world respecting basic Human Rights, laws could not exist, apart from the corresponding constitution stating as its only moral value the unbridled freedom for the individual, and putting the means to protect that freedom. The only exception to this rule are externalities: when your freedom is infringed by my freedom, without you having a say about it. In this case, there is the possibility of imposing government violence, since your freedom is potentially being curtailed. But of course, appealing to externalities is an easy trick to impose government slavery by the back door, so its application should be severely limited.
In practice, government executives should work only on an honour basis: they should see their role as an individual penalty (no pay, loss of opportunity for their own business, putting their wealth as a guarantee for the rest of their life), but worth taking anyway since it is honourable for them and their country to do so.
JE comments: Jordi, isn't this basically the view of the classical anarchists, who had a long and noble tradition in Catalonia? In grad school I read a lot of Joan Montseny (Federico Urales), who could have made the same argument you present above (minus the "Matrix" part).
