Don't Forget the Public Library, Indeed (Clyde McMorrow, USA, 01/26/16 11:12 am)

My thanks to Gary Moore (25 January); I had forgotten all about the public library. San José has a beautiful new branch two blocks from my house. The focus seems to be on Vietnamese bodice-busters and entertaining the students from the adjacent Jr. High School, but I have used their research facilities in the past and the results were very good. The City and San José State University share a system, and I have been able to get material from all major lending collections. I will talk to them and send in a report.

The San José City main library now shares a building with the University library and all of the branches have been recently rebuilt as a result of a series of special assessments to property taxes. Our voters will vote for all bond issues related to the "happy" infrastructure (schools, community centers, libraries, fire stations) so the city funds these with separate taxes, leaving the less attractive functions lumped together in the general fund.

So, in the next day or two, I will take my laptop to the library and try to access a JSTOR article, then walk to the community center, take a class on "How to use the iPhone your daughter bought you," and have the free lunch for seniors.

JE comments: I need an iPhone class too--but I bought the dang thing myself.  (To be fair, my 6S is much better than my old 5S, which never worked very well as a phone or anything else.)

Best of luck and happy researching, Clyde! I hope you'll give us occasional updates on Practical Tips for the Independent Scholar.
