Vulnerability of Aircraft Carriers (Brian Blodgett, USA, 05/28/19 4:46 am)

In response to Eugenio Battaglia (May 26th), one of the most common uses for aircraft carriers is force projection, and I am wondering how Italy will use its new carrier Trieste. The ship has some wonderful features, but in a time where it seems unlikely for Italy to go to war against her neighboring countries or to even use it in conjunction with NATO forces, perhaps Eugenio can enlighten me.

Even the US is struggling with what to do with its carriers, as they are no longer the mighty threat that they once were since nations with cruise missiles can target the carrier and its protective covering ships until one or two get through, thus causing the loss of around 6,000 people (just on the carrier) and over $13 billion in equipment.

JE comments:  In a nutshell, are aircraft carriers becoming obsolete?  Are they already so?  Italy's Trieste seems to be designed as much for disaster relief and humanitarian missions (note the hospital) as for projecting force.

Nothing says you mean business more than sending in a carrier fleet.  However, this role used to belong to battleships, and they are now nothing more than floating museums.
