Paul Preston Receives Knighthood (Boris Volodarsky, Austria, 06/21/18 5:39 am)

I hope, as a grateful and loving pupil, to be the first to deliver this great news to WAIS: Professor Paul Preston has been knighted in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours:

CONGRATULATIONS, dear Paul! Sir Paul!

JE comments:  There is no one more deserving, and Sir Paul Preston does WAIS very proud.  This is splendid news and I love the sound of it.  And suddenly, though I never thought I'd say this, McCartney has been demoted to my second favorite Sir Paul.

  • In Praise of Sir Paul Preston (Henry Levin, USA 06/21/18 8:53 AM)
Congratulations to Paul Preston. I knew of his work even before I knew of WAIS. His attention to careful scholarship, clarity in expression, and willingness to engage in debate about the evidence and interpretation are an inspiration.

JE comments: Even before the ink dried on the announcement, I also received ¡Vivas! for Sir Paul from Eugenio Battaglia and John Heelan. I may be wrong, but I believe Paul Preston is the first knight in WAISdom since the illustrious Sir Harold Mitchell (1900-1983), a colleague and close friend of Ronald Hilton and one of our founding financial sponsors.

In addition to Sir Paul's excellence in scholarship, I'd also like to stress his kindness, sense of humor, and unparalleled generosity.
