PostI Want my Maypo (David Duggan, USA, 05/25/17 6:21 am)
Actually: there's a double reference to Francisco Ramírez's post on Aleppo (24 May).
Back in the 1960s there was an advertising campaign for a brand of cereal Maypo, and two little kids with cereal bowls with one saying "Who ate my Maypo?" and blaming it on "Marky." Maybe you had to be there, but as they say, if you can remember the '60s, you weren't there.
JE comments: I suspect David Duggan is conflating Life cereal's Mikey with Marky Maypo. The latter, who arrived first in the cereal timeline, was a little cartoon cowboy with the tagline, "I want my Maypo!" Mikey, from the 1970s, was the taciturn youngster who couldn't get enough from Life. "He likes it! Hey Mikey!"
Returning to Maypo, Wikipedia tells us that the slogan inspired the fledgling network MTV in the 1980s: "I want my MTV."
"If you remember the '60s, you weren't there." Precious.
